The Cougar softball team got just one of two games in before being snowed out against Lamar Community College. WNCC earned a 6-4 win in nine innings in the opener to improve their regional record to 4-1 and their overall record to 10-4. The second game will be made up later.
The WNCC men didn’t even take to the field as their doubleheader with Otero Junior College was postponed until Tuesday.
The softball team, though, earned a hard-fought win against Lamar. WNCC coach Maria Winn-Ratliff said the day started out decent and then it started to snow in the third inning with bitter wind chills.
WNCC held a 2-1 lead after five innings. The Cougars added two more runs in the sixth to go up 4-1, only to see Lamar get three runs in the sixth to the tie the game. WNCC finally scratched across two runs in the ninth inning to win the game.
Jessie McNabb reached base by smacking a double. Amanda Torimaru then walked to put two runners on base. With two outs, Kara Ryman hit a fly ball to leftfield that saw the left-fielder, center-fielder and shortstop misplay the ball win strong winds to score both runs.
Kelsey Garner started the game and went 4 1/3 innings by allowing seven hits and striking out five to get the no-decision.
Natasha Dypchey picked up the win, throwing 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs, striking out three and scattering seven hits.
