LIBERAL, Kan. - The Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team had its 32-match winning streak snapped Saturday at the Seward County Invite in Liberal, Kan.
In a battle of top 10 teams, the No. 1 Cougars dropped a 30-27, 28-30, 15-12 setback to No. 7 Frank Phillips College. It was the first loss for the Cougars since Sept. 1 at the Salt Lake Invite.
It didn't take long for WNCC to get back on the winning track though as the Cougars posted a 30-17, 33-31 win over Arizona Western in their final match of the tournament. The victory pushed WNCC's overall record to 42-2 heading into Tuesday's home finale against Laramie County Community College.
WNCC coach Chris Green said his team struggled matching up with Frank Phillips' hitters in the loss.
"We just couldn't stop their two hitters," Green said. "They just played very well against us and we had a hard time slowing them down. It was a tough match. We just didn't do a very good job of blocking their hitters."
Aida Bauza led the Cougars in hitting against Frank Phillips with 16 kills. Jennifer Eichler added 15 kills and three blocks and Nayka Benitez had six points and 12 digs. Soriana Pacheco registered 40 set assists from her setter's position and Shawntell Jones finished with six digs and three blocks. Also in the match for WNCC, Stacie Meisner served six points and Fatima Balza had three blocks.
In the win over Arizona Western, Pacheco tallied a double-double of 10 kills and 24 assists. She also served two aces. Benitez led the team from the service line with 10 points, while Kendra Schauermann led the way defensively with five digs. Jones totaled five blocks.
Tuesday's home finale will also be featured by sophomore and parents night for the Cougar players. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Cougar Palace. It will be the last home match for the six sophomors -- Soriana Pacheco, Jennifer Eichler, Shawntell Jones, Kendra Schauermann, Stacie Meisner and Cassie Vrooman.
WNCC will finish its regular-season schedule with a four-match road swing through Colorado against Trinidad State, Otero, Lamar and Northeastern.
