WNCC softball rallies in seventh to drop Garden City

Western Nebraska Community College pitchers Bianca Duran and Shelby McGraw combined on a first-game perfect game and the Cougars recorded their fourth straight shutout in dropping North Platte Community College 8-0 and 23-0 Friday afternoon at Volunteer Field.
WNCC, 48-8, pounded out 31 hits, including 15 extra base hits, in the two wins.
WNCC sophomore Kayla Romey said it was a complete team effort, including an outstanding performance from the pitching staff.
"We did well both offensively and defensively. We came up with some big plays when we needed them. As far as hitting, we did really well. We strung our hits together and did the simple things right."
As much as the offense was clicking, the defense made plays, including Ramey preserving the perfect game bid by throwing out a runner from right field to first base. Pitching was also stellar as Duran, McGraw and RaVae Herrera game up just three hits in the two games.
"The pitching staff did really well. They were moving the ball and that is what we want," Romey said. "That [great pitching] helps our defense and they did really well. We made big plays when we needed to and did the simple things and that is what counts."
The first-game was a gem by Duran and McGraw. Duran went four innings in striking out six, while McGraw finished off the game with a 13-pitch fifth inning. Duran threw just 45 pitches in the first-game win.
Offensively, the Cougars controlled the two contests from the start, scoring three times in the first on four hits. Kasey Cash and Jennifer Cottle each had doubles in the inning.
WNCC closed out the game in the fourth with three runs as Romey singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Duran. Cash then doubled and scored on Cottle's home run.
WNCC had three players finish with two hits each. Cottle went 2-for-2 with a double and a home run. She also had three RBIs and scored a run. Cash and Angel Council each pounded out two hits. Cash had two doubles and two runs scored, while Council had two RBIs and a run scored.
Danielle Hearn and Lindsey Shiels-Brophy each had doubles in the first game.
WNCC was even more explosive in the second game, getting 23 hits and 23 runs. The Cougars had two home runs, a triple and six doubles in the win.
The second game was put away early as WNCC held an 8-0 lead after one and a 13-0 lead after two. WNCC's explosive offense was a combination of a variety of hits. An run-scoring double by Cottle, a walk by McGraw, a two-run single by Shiels-Brophy, two-run triple by Hearn, and a two-run single by Duran helped the Cougars to the 8-0 first inning lead.
WNCC added five more runs in the second as Hearn had a two-run double and Duran blasted a three-run home run by Duran to push the score to 13-0. WNCC added seven runs on five hits in the third, including a 2-run double by by Mariah Shepherd and a run-scoring double by Cash.
The Cougars added three more runs in the fourth as Shiels-Brophy led off with a solo home run followed by a double by Hearn and singles by Duran and Nicole Weiss.
Shiels-Brophy and Hearn each went 4-for-4 in the game. Sheils-Brophy had four RBIs, four runs scored, and a home run, while Hearn had five RBIs, four runs scored, two doubles, and a triple.
Duran and Council each had three hits, while Cash, Mariah Shepherd, and Romey each had two hits. Duran finished the game with six RBIs, three runs scored, and a stolen base. Council had two runs scored, a RBI, and a stolen base, while Shepherd had a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
Herrera and McGraw combined on a 3-hitter in the five-inning game. Herrera allowed two hits in three innings, while striking out two. McGraw went two innings with one strike out.
WNCC will be back at home this weekend when they host Garden City Community College on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's contest starts at 1 p.m. and is dorm parent recognition day. Sunday's contest starts at 11 a.m. and will be sophomore recognition day as well as a dedication and public recognition to all the individuals that volunteered their time and materials to put up the new rest rooms at Volunteer field.
