WNCC snap 3-game losing skid with overtime win against Lamar


LAMAR, Colo. -- The Western Nebraska Community College women's basketball team snapped a 3-game losing streak with a hard-fought sun-region win against Lamar Community College Saturday evening 85-81 in overtime.
               The Cougars, who were depleted with injuries after Idil Ozbayrak went down with a knee injury on Tuesday, received big contributions from a variety of players, including Kelsey Doddridge and Samantha Sanders. Doddridge had the last seven points of the first half to give the Cougars a 45-33 halftime lead.
               In the second half, WNCC never relinquished the lead. Lamar sliced the lead to 52-51 on back-to-back 3-pointers. The Cougars came back as Jessica Aratani had an old-fashioned 3-point play and then Samantha Sanders had back-to-back 3-pointers for a 61-54 lead. WNCC pushed the lead to 70-59 on an Aratani bucket only to watch the Lopes came back to tie the game at 72-72 with 18 seconds remaining to force overtime.
               The overtime period saw Lamar open the extra period with a bucket, but WNCC quickly took control, going on a 7-0 run that was highlighted by Sanders getting an old-fashioned 3-point play. Lamar cut the lead to two points twice but each time the Cougars had an answer to pick up their 18th win of the season.
               The Cougars are now 5-2 in the sub-region are still in the hunt for a top four seeding in the regional tournament that begins March 9. WNCC will next be in action Saturday when they host Northeast Nebraska at 1 p.m..
