LAMAR, Colo. -- The Western Nebraska Community College men's basketball team ran into a red hot Lamar Community College team in suffering its second straight sub-region defeat, falling to the Runnin' Lopes 91-78 Saturday evening.
The big difference in the game was shooting, where the 11th-ranked Cougars were 38 percent from the field and just 27 percent from beyond the arc. WNCC also shot 68 percent from the free throw line (21 of 35) while Lamar was 20 of 31 from the line.
The Cougars led just twice in the contest, both times early on. The Lopes, in the meantime, kept the Cougars at bay for the majority of the contest. Lamar held a 40-34 lead at halftime.
Lamar used a 14-0 run early in the second half to open up the lead to 58-37. The Cougars sliced the lead to 12 points, 73-61, at one stretch before Lamar went on a 8-0 to push the lead back to 81-61.
WNCC had three players finish in double figures. Marko Kovacevic paced the team with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Raul Delgado had 16 points and three 3-pointers. Sebastian Suarez also chipped in 18 points for the Cougars.
Lamar, who fell to Eastern Wyoming College on Friday night 60-51, was led by Preston Rayburn with 15 points while Trey Beverly finished with 13 points. The Runnin' Lopes had six players in double figures.
WNCC, 20-5, will next be in action Saturday when they host Northeast Community College at 3 p.m.
