STERLING,
Colo. -- The Western Nebraska Community College men's soccer team overcame a
2-0 deficit to register its first Region IX win in dramatic fashion, topping
Northeastern Junior College 3-2 in double overtime Friday afternoon in
Sterling, Colo.
The
win was WNCC's second of the season and first in Region IX to put the Cougars
1-3 in conference play. But, at one point, it looked as if the Cougars were not
going to get the win.
After
a scoreless first half, NJC went up 2-0 with about 20 minutes to play while
playing a man down. One of NJC's goals came on a penalty kick as well.
After
spotting the Plainsmen the 2-0 lead, the Cougars decided to wake up and they
went on a two goal scoring spree to not the game and force overtime. WNCC's
first goal came off the foot of Thomas Wright off an assist from Jacob Santos.
WNCC
continued playing hard in the final minutes and finally ended up tying the game
off a Edwin Contreras goal with assists from Wright and Santos.
Neither
team scored in the first sudden death 10-minute period, and both teams nearly
didn't score in the second overtime period either. But, with under a minute to
play, Wright scored his second goal of the game off an assist from Kyle
Gonzales to give the Cougars the victory.
WNCC
coach Todd Rasnic said while he will take the win, he wasn't pleased with how
his team played overall.
"We
got down 2-0 and than we decided to play," he said. "They even got up
on us playing a man down."
The
Cougars even outshot the Plainsmen taking 20 shots on frame compared to just
three for NJC. The bottom line if the Cougars want to make a run to a regional
title is they have to start converting shots.
The
Cougars, 2-5, will return to action Sunday when they host Lamar Community
College at the Landers Soccer Complex. Kickoff for the men's game only is
slated for 2 p.m.
