The Cougar men registered their first victory of the season in posting a 2-1 win over the University of Wyoming Club team. The Cougar women won their second straight by shutting out Salt Lake Community College 3-0.
WNCC coach Todd Rasnic was pleased with the wins, but said they still need room for improvement.
“I thought we came out strong, but we need to pick up our speed at the beginning of every game,” he said. “I thought we had some moments of good play. We are getting to that point where we really get ourselves focused on playing consistent soccer for 90 minutes.”
The Cougar men held a 1-0 halftime lead as Tony Rocha scored in the 30th minute off an assist by Kareem Hernandez.
WNCC added another goal in the second half as Hernandez recorded his second assist of the game, delivering a pass to Marcel Sales for the game winner.
The Cougars outshot the Cowboys 7-1.
The women dominated the Salt Lake squad, outshooting them 9-7 in getting their second-straight shut out win. It was Cougar Jessica Taylor’s second straight shut out in net.
Gering’s Keah Brost started the scoring, netting a goal off an assist by Ana Jacobo in the 44th minute.
WNCC added two more goals in the second half. Jacobo scored two minutes in the half off an assist from Brost for a 2-0 lead. Taylor Johns had an unassisted goal to wrap up the scoring.
Rasnic does see great things from both teams down the road.
“I still see promise from both teams,” he said. “if we want to get farther down the road this year, in the post season, we will need to improve what we are doing. There are good moments in the games where we are putting together 10 and 15 minute runs.
WNCC will start Region IX play on Friday when they travel to Western Wyoming Community College.
