The Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team ran their record to 15-1 on the season with three impressive victories at the Columbus Invite in Columbus, Neb.
The Cougars opened with a 30-8, 30-11 commanding win over Cloud County Community College followed by a 30-10, 30-15 win over Iowa Central Community College. The team finished up the first day with a 30-13, 30-19 win over Central Community College-Columbus to round out the first day. WNCC will have one more pool play match Saturday a 8:45 a.m. (MST) against Butler County.
In the opener against Cloud, freshman Nayka Benitez tossed in 21 points along with 11 aces to help the women to the win. In fact, Benitez' serving proved stellar in the record books. The 11 aces ended up two shy of tying the school record of 13 set by Marina Bazana in 1999, and the last time a Cougar finished with at least 11 aces was in 2004.
Against Iowa Central, Jennifer Eichler tallied eight kills and nine points, while Soriana Pacheco finished with 23 set assists.
Against Central, Benitez finished with 11 points, Pacheco had 25 assists and eight kills, Eichler had nine kills and four blocks, Aida Bauza had eight kills, Fatima Balza had seven kills and Shawntell Jones had four blocks.
