LAMAR,
Colo. -- It wasn't a good night for the Western Nebraska Community College
men's and women's basketball teams at Lamar Community College Saturday evening.
The
Cougar women held a 37-30 halftime lead and then watched the aggressive Lamar
team come back for a 76-69 south sub-region win.
The
Cougar men fell behind 23-9 before falling in the final minute to Lamar
Community College 61-55.
Both
Cougar squads will hope to rebound on Tuesday when they host Casper College
beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Cougar Palace.
The
Cougar women fell for the second time in sub-region play but they also played Lamar
tough. Lamar came into the contest scoring over the century mark the last four
games, including dropping Eastern Wyoming on Friday night 117-98.
The
Cougars were in prime position to knock off the team that is leading the south
sub-region, holding a 37-30 lead at halftime. Lamar, then, went on a 17-2 run
to open the second half to hold a 47-39 lead. WNCC clawed its way back, cutting
the deficit to 57-56 before regaining the lead at 67-66 on a Laurin Rivera
bucket with 3:15 to play.
Lamar
picked up the pressure and the Cougars made some crucial turnovers as the
Runnin' Lopes held the Cougars scoreless the final three minutes to remain
unbeaten in the sub-region.
A
big problem for the Cougars was Lamar's pressure defense that force the Cougars
into 39 turnovers. shooting was different for the Cougars. WNCC shot 51 percent
for the game, but did not connect on one 3-pointer. WNCC was also 21 of 30 from
the free throw line.
Lamar,
on the other hand, shot 34 percent from the field, but they connected on eight
3-pointers.
On a
brightside, the Cougar women out-rebounded the Lopes 52-31. Abi Lujan paced the
Cougars on the boards, pulling down 10 boards.
Ashley
Stevens paced the Cougars in the loss with a double-double of 25 points and 11
made free throws. Stevens was 11 of 12 from the line.
Lile
Havili was the only other Cougar in double figures, finishing with 11 points.
Angela Vigil posted nine points, while Shalisa Moffit had eight points.
The
Cougar men, after spotting Lamar a 23-9 early lead, came back to make a contest
of it. WNCC trailed just 27-21 at halftime.
In
the second half, WNCC sliced the lead to 37-36 and then trailed 43-41 on two
Joel Einfeldt free throws. Lamar came back, bolting back to a double-digit lead
at 52-42. Once again, the Cougars battled back, slicing the deficit to a single
digit at 55-56 on two Derrick Bowers free throws with 19 second to play.
Lamar
finished off the game by hitting clutch free throws for their fourth win of the
season.
Lamar
was 15 of 22 from the free throw line and connected on six 3-pointers, while
the Cougars were 17 of 21 from the line while going 4 of 19 from beyond the
arc.
WNCC
had just two players in double figures, led by Einfeldt with 19 and Bowers with
17.
