KYLE, S.D. – The Western Nebraska Community College men’s basketball team opened the season on a strong note, posting a 116-46 win over Oglala Lakota College Tuesday evening in Kyle, S.D.
The Cougars ran out to a 65-19 halftime lead and never looked back in getting the win.
The Cougars put eight players in double figures, paced by sophomore Joe Stock with 16 points followed by Justin Standley with 13 and Hauns Brereton with 11. Stock canned four 3-pointers on the night while Standley had three treys.
WNCC coach Russ Beck said the team attacked the basketball, recording a number of 3-pointers, as well as about seven dunks.
“I thought the guys were pretty eager for the first season game to roll around,” he said. “With it being the first game, there obviously are things that we need to improve on with rebounding being the biggest thing in making sure that we box out. I think overall we are pleased with the outcome. We just tried not to look at the scoreboard the entire game and we wanted to maintain that consistent level of energy throughout the course of the game.”
Beck said this team could be an offensive team this season.
“It was an entertaining game,” he said. “We hit some threes and we had about seven dunks, including two or three putback dunks. We attacked the offensive glass pretty hard, so I think if we can get our defensive rebounding shored up; that will be our next step in progression.”
The Cougars, 1-0, will be home for three straight contests beginning this weekend. WNCC will host Buckley Air Force Base at 7:30 p.m. on Friday followed by Oglala Lakota Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. They will then host Lamar Community College at 7:30 p.m.
The Cougar women will open up their season on Friday when they host Little Big Horn College at 5:30 p.m. followed by entertaining Hastings College junior varsity on Saturday at 1 p.m.
