WNCC's Groves named NJCAA player of the week

Western Nebraska Community College softball player Katie Groves. a sophomore from Bluffdale, Utah, was named the National Junior College Athletic Association player of the week on Wednesday for her performance last weekend against Luna Community College.

Groves had a standout week for the Cougars as she helped them go 4-0 in capturing their 40th win of the season by hitting .769 (10-13) with 12 runs, 4 doubles, three home runs, 10 RBI's, three walks, and three stolen bases. She had an astonishing .825 on base percentage last week as well.

Western Nebraska played a four game set against Luna Community College last week. In the doubleheader on April 30, Groves hit a combined 6-for-8 with five runs, four doubles, one home run, four RBI's, one walk and three stolen bases. In game one, Groves was 3-for-5 with her three hits coming in the form of doubles.

On May Day, Groves was back at it again in the Cougars doubleheader going 4-for-5 with seven runs two home runs, six RBI's, and two walks.

On the Season and after the two games on Monday against Black Hills State, Groves is hitting .497 on the season with 82 RBIs, 86 runs scored, 20 doubles and 15 home runs.

Groves is the second Cougar to be honored as player of the week as Jordan Schoepflin earned the honor on April 21.

The Cougars will next be in action on Friday night during the Region IX tournament which they host at Volunteer Field in Scottsbluff against the winner of the Lamar Community College and McCook Community College contest, which will be played earlier that day.
